To simplify the paperwork involved in pledging,
you can either just put a form on the web for printing out, or actually let people fill in an online form with the amount they expect to pledge for the year. In the latter case, it would be a good idea to use a secure web site (enable SSL/TLS).

Main Page > Websters

This page contains a list of software and/or solutions used to manage calendar information on UU congregational websites.

CalendarScript
Advantages: Powerful script, easy to install, allows multiple views, search features, templates, user authentication, multiple calendars, and SSIs. You can configure your home page to be automatically updated with new calendar information. Plug-ins extend the feature lists.

Disadvantages: Requires duplication of efforts to maintain an online calendar and one for your newsletter and/or order of service, though it's possible to save the "Printable Calendar" as HTML and bring it into Word to manipulate if you have added the Printable Calendar template available from www.much2.com. This Perl script requires the ability to execute cgi scripts on your server, which not all churches may have. Fairly slow to update for those with dialup access. Individual instances of recurring events cannot be changed without an additional plug-in from www.much2.com. An event cannot begin and end on different days (e.g., a party that lasts from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. cannot be entered).

Cost: $50 for non-profit license. NOTE: UUism Networks has a license for UUN members that want to share a single installation on uuism.net. Each calendar is separate and can be administered by a single user with a password. Additional users would be $4 per user. - Jim Hermann

Examples:
*First UU Church of Austin
*Fellowship X
*First Unitarian Church of St. Louis
*Michael Servetus UU Fellowship, Vancouver, Washington
*Unitarian Universalist Church of Elgin

ServiceU/EventU
Advantages: Integrates multiple workflows : event management, resource scheduling, volunteer management, registration for events, donations, and newsletters. This is an ASP which means it can be used by anyone with access to a browser.

Disadvantages : Compared to the other options, this is the most expensive. There is a risk of interrupted service if the company experiences technical or financial problems. Exit strategy (i.e. switching to an alternative) may be difficult.

Cost: Start-up fee of $199. Monthly charges depend on the number of features used, but can range from $45 to $145 per month.

Examples: All Souls Kansas City, First Unitarian Society of Madison

LoCalendar.com
Advantages: FREE & it provides FREE PUBLICITY for your events (if you want it can put your events in a public search where people can find your events on a zip code search, though events like meetings can be left off the public search); it can be edited by anyone who has the username and password anywhere with no special software or web editing knowledge (just ability to fill out a form on the internet)

Disadvantages : Like all free services, it is subject to change without notice; site goes down occasionally; it may not remain free; some customization features are Windows compatible only; if you want your neighbors to know about the LoCalendar zip code search function, you have to do the PR for it, including adding the information in the footer or header; it has a feature that warns you if the subject line is too short for the public calendar, though you can add anything & then go back & edit it & it then will publish; it takes a little longer to edit than other calendars because you're editing it online instead of on your computer so you have to deal with internet speeds

Cost: FREE

Examples: Davies Memorial UU Church Calendar - do a public search on our zip code 20748 to see which events are on the public calendar - you might need to do a search for the month instead of the week since we don't have public events every week, especially in the summer (well, we do have services, but sometimes the sermon is not listed). A search also found that these churches use it.:
*Unitarian Universalist Church of Las Cruces

WebCalendar
Advantages: Full-featured, widely used, well-documented, free web-based calendar system. Can be configured as an event calendar viewable by visitors, and also as a single-user calendar or a multi-user calendar for groups of users.
Supports views, reports, log-in security, search, recurring events, import/export to ical, vcal, palm, ODBC, etc. The flexibility of the "reports" feature allows it to be used
to post and display a clean view of upcoming Sunday Services, etc. Free on-line demo at the web site.
The software (written in PHP) is also free (licensed under the GPL).
Currently in "release candidate" status, and has very high "activity/usage/ranking" - 99.95% / >500 downloads per day / ranked 9th most active project on SourceForge.net.

Disadvantages : Beta

Cost: FREE

Examples:
*Aiken Unitarian Universalist Church From AUUC - This program is very easy to use, has some great features and seems very flexible. The color options are wide open so we are still experimenting there. It definately solves our problem with getting information on the web in an easily accessible format.
Online Donation Services
Which web donation services are you using? (Please answer all questions under the service you use or add a new one if yours is not listed there. Do not list Shopping Services that give donations here - you can start a new topic for that if you'd like.)

Tips for Using Online Services
* Read your agreement
* Check the policies about privacy and security
* Make sure you will be notified by email of any transactions
* Transfer any funds that you have received into your account as soon as possible
* If you haven't received an email from them in a month's time, check the account to make sure there have been no transactions
* Use credit cards that will not charge you if you report that your number was stolen (most charge $50 per transaction until you notify them of theft, but I find that many will waive that if it is "identity theft" - using your number without your permission or direct access to your card)
* Use checking accounts from banks that will cover unauthorized use of your account and that don't have large sums of money in them if possible (you can set up a special account and then transfer the money to the usual account)
* Always login from your website browser, and never from an email. This will prevent you from "phishing" -- an online criminal tactic where fraudulent email is sent in an attempt to gain your account and password information.
Enter your answer here. I was just looking at this site and on brief examination, it appears to cost 3% of each transaction (to accept credit card payment). This appears to me in line with the cost of PayPal. [- Tom Upshaw]
Amazon.com Honor System
** Amazon.com is a trusted name, most UUs will have bought something from the site at one time or another. There are several point-n-click options to create what are called payboxes to place on your website as well as a paypage, which is a "landing page" that fully describes how the Amazon Honor System works and answers questions users might have. Money is a one way deposit into your checking account, which reduces the chance of online fraud.

* What are the disadvantages of this service over others? (If you don't know, describe what you find bad or annoying or not optimal about it. E.g. Does it only allow one type of donation? Does it take a long time to sign up?)
**Not everyone is an Amazon.com customer. Some people really don't like Amazon, and will choose not to support them. Limited customer service. Limited to U.S. customers only. You'll need to provide a credit card to register. Not suitable for anything other than asking for donations or selling "digital content".
**Amazon asks you to put a link on your page to an image served from their servers, in which they put a customized message. This allows them to track visits by all users to your site (see Wikipedia:web bug). If the person browsing has an Amazon "cookie" indicating that they are an Amazon customer, the message is personalized to them. Both of these practices can be alarming to users, who may expect privacy when dealing with matters of religion.

* What does it cost? As of what date? (This will need to be updated if changed.)
**As of 08/04/04, the rates are 2.9% plus 30 cents per transaction.
** PayPal is owned by Ebay, which has increased customer service, services, and options since they bought the company.
** PayPal can be used as part of a full ecommerce solution, more than just donations or pledges.
** PayPal pages can be integrated to match the look and feel of your site.
** There are options for recurring billing on a monthly basis, i.e. pledges.

* What are the disadvantages of this service over others? (If you don't know, describe what you find bad or annoying or not optimal about it. E.g. Does it only allow one type of donation? Does it take a long time to sign up?)
**Some paypal users like Abiword have complained that they lost a bunch of money that people donated to them because someone stole it and paypal did not insure the loss (not being a "financial institution" or something like that) . Most observers recommend that you withdraw money donated to you on a regular basis rather than leaving it at paypal as if it was a bank. See also paypalsucks.com. There is a class action suit for which PayPal is paying, though it claims no responsibility. You can see details about it at https://www.paypal.com/settlement/. Individual comments about this can be left on the "discussion" page (click on the tab at the top of the page).
** As an anti-fraud measure, PayPal limits withdrawals to $500 per month when you first open an account. This limit can be removed when you verify your identity with 2 out of the 3 following items: a credit card, a bank account, and a social security number. We did not have a credit card, and they would not accept an employer identification number in lieu of an SSN. One of our employees had to submit their SSN for verification.

* What does it cost? As of what date? (This will need to be updated if changed.)
** As of 08/04/04, the standard charge is 2.9% plus 30 cents per transaction. There are discounts based upon monthly volume : 3,001 to 10,000 is 2.5%; 10,001 to 100,000 is 2.2%, and a monthly volume over $100,000 drops the rate to 1.9%. The discounted rates all have the baseline of 30 cents per transaction.

* Who uses it? How long? How many donations have you received from this service? Please give a link to your donation information on your web site.

** The First UU Church of Austin uses PayPal to solicit online donations to support our web ministries. We are averaging about $50 to $100 a year through PayPal donations, and approximately $400 to $500 per year from people who choose to write a check instead. We also use the site Mollyguard.com to manage event registrations, and have processed approximately a thousand dollars through the combination of these two services.

The Recorder - http://recorder.sourceforge.net - is a Web-based information system for small congregations. It tracks people (members, friends, guests, contacts, whomever), groups (club, committees, families, working groups, people who can cook, whatever you like), pledges, contributions, and projects. The last is designed to help keep an organizational memory of how-tos for bake sales, membership drives, lay-lead services, and whatever else you can think of.

The Recorder is open source, covered by the GNU general public license (GPL). Any person or organization can use it at no charge.

The system has been designed to meet the operational constraints of small congregations (such as not having a building, a full-time staff, or much money). For example, it:

* Is Web-based (so work can be distributed)

* Does not overburden member's underpowered home computers

* Has its own email client that doesn't depend on user's computers being set up correctly

* Has a flexible permissions system (so that users see only the data they need to do their tasks)

* Allows very easy data backup to multiple locations

* Can export data for use with accounting packages (e.g., QuickBooks), spreadsheets, word processors, database systems, etc.

* Etc.

The Recorder costs less than USD $20/month to run. However, if you already have a Web site on a server capable of hosting the Recorder (as you probably do), the marginal cost of running it is zero. Not only is the Recorder open source, but all of the software it uses to do its work (e.g., the database package MySQL) is also open source, and readily available on low-end Web hosting accounts.

The downside? The Recorder is not complete. The current version does all of the things listed above - you can try a demo version at http://recorder.sourceforge.net/. However, the documentation is in progress, and the feature set needs to be rounded out. It is anticipated that a complete operational version will be available by the end of 2004.

Contact Kieran Mathieson (webmaster@paintcreek.org) if you're interested in learning more, or testing the Recorder. Feedback is welcome, and will help make the Recorder a useful tool for small congregations.

The UU-Money email list is for "Information Sharing among Society Finance Leaders". This page goes beyond the limit of "finance leaders" to anyone in UU congregations who are concerned about finances and fundraising. If you have a resource to share, please add it here.

Online Donation Services
Which web donation services are you using? (Please answer all questions under the service you use or add a new one if yours is not listed there. Do not list Shopping Services that give donations here - you can start a new topic for that if you'd like.)

Tips for Using Online Services
* Read your agreement
Link: Amazon.com Honor System

**Many people have used PayPal as individuals and small businesses for years with no problem.
**Pay Pal Security Links
***Here is a link for Pay Pal Security information
***Here is the link for the Pay Pal User Agreement about how they handle Error Resolution
** PayPal is owned by Ebay, which has increased customer service, services, and options since they bought the company.
** PayPal can be used as part of a full ecommerce solution, more than just donations or pledges.
** PayPal pages can be integrated to match the look and feel of your site.
** There are options for recurring billing on a monthly basis, i.e. pledges.

Split the Plate Offering Policy
This is the Split the Plate Offering Policy for the First UU Church of Austin. A current list of recipients can be found at http://www.austinuu.org/socialaction/splittheplate.htm

Date of Board approval:
1/21/03

Purpose
To document the established FUUCA practice of a monthly "Split-the-Plate" offering and to provide guidelines to the Social Action Committee ("the Committee") for selection of recipients of these offerings. The Committee has asked the Board to clarify the respective responsibilities of the Board and the Committee in the selection process and has suggested certain criteria to make the selection process work more smoothly.

Scope
This policy applies to the practice of designating one Sunday per month, for eleven months, on which the non-pledge worship service collections are split evenly between FUUCA and a specified charity, and to provide guidelines for the selection of recipients of such offerings.

History
Several years ago, the Board of Trustees voted to designate one-half of the non-pledge plate collections on one Sunday per month as a donation to a charitable organization outside FUUCA. The Board delegated to the Social Action Committee the responsibility for presenting to the Board of Trustees, in November of each year, a slate of eleven recommended recipients and one alternate for the coming year. The Social Action Committee has done a commendable job in soliciting nominations for Split the Plate recipients, selecting from among the nominated charities, and in describing the work of the selected charities to the congregation on Split the Plate Sundays. Each year, FUUCA donates a significant sum, $11,578, in 2002, to charities serving the larger community. The Board of Trustees considers the Split the Plate program an important part of the work of this church.

Guiding Principles
The Split the Plate program furthers the mission of this church "to make a positive difference in the lives of our members, our children and the larger community".

Criteria for selecting Split the Plate recipients
The Board delegates to the Social Action Committee, or its successor, the responsibility for recommending to the Board of Trustees, in November of each year, a slate of Split the Plate recipients for the coming year. To assist the Committee in making these selections, the Board establishes the following guidelines:

1.Recipient organizations shall support a charitable purpose that is consistent with Unitarian Universalist principles.

2.To ensure that recipients are organizations to which the FUUCA, as a charitable organization, may legally donate funds, recipient organizations must hold federal tax-exempt status under section 501c(3) of the United States Internal Revenue Code.

An exception to this requirement may be made for certain organizations, such as our Romanian Partner Church, which do not have IRS tax exempt status but which, because of their mission and administration, can be identified as legitimate charitable organizations. If the Committee nominates an organization that does not hold charitable tax exempt status, the Committee must state that the nominee does not hold 501c(3) exempt status and detail for the Board the basis on which the Committee recommends the organization as a legitimate charitable organization. A charitable organization shall not be ineligible solely because it is the charitable arm of an umbrella organization that does not itself hold a charitable tax exemption.

3.Recipient organizations should be independent of the FUUCA.

4.An organization to which FUUCA makes a contribution through a line item in the budget may be an eligible Split the Plate recipient. If the Committee nominates such an organization, the Board requests an explanation of why an additional contribution would be appropriate.

5.The slate of proposed recipients should reflect a variety of charitable causes.

While the Board of Trustees, as the body which bears ultimate legal responsibility for the expenditure FUUCA funds, must retain the ultimate authority to name the recipients of Split the Plate offerings, it is the intent of the Board to accept the Social Action Committee's nominations which meet the above listed criteria. The Board of Trustees again thanks the Social Action Committee for its careful solicitation of nominations and selection of Split the Plate recipients, and the members and friends of FUUCA who have helped to make this program a success.

* Read your agreement
** PayPal is owned by Ebay, which has increased customer service, services, and options since they bought the company.
** PayPal can be used as part of a full ecommerce solution, more than just donations or pledges.
** PayPal pages can be integrated to match the look and feel of your site.
** There are options for recurring billing on a monthly basis, i.e. pledges.

Amazon.com is a trusted name, most UUs will have bought something from the site at one time or another. There are several point-n-click options to create what are called payboxes to place on your website as well as a paypage, which is a "landing page" that fully describes how the Amazon Honor System works and answers questions users might have. Money is a one way deposit into your checking account, which reduces the chance of online fraud.

Tips for Using Online Services

* Read your agreement

Adding A Search Feature
There are several options for adding a "search this site" feature to your website.

Note that if you use a third-party service, you are giving that service access to information about who searches your site and what they search it for, which may be a concern depending on the privacy practices of that third party. See, e.g., web bug for some related issues and implications.

*Many web site software packages already have a built-in search component. Look in your program's documentation for instructions on how to use and implement. Examples: MediaWiki (used for UUWiki), Microsoft Frontpage.
*It is easy to use Google to provide a site search function. See e.g. the First UU Church of Madison search page
*AtomZ.com Express Search is free for sites under 500 pages. Your pages are updated on a set weekly schedule. The service is hosted on their servers, so it can be used on all UU websites. The templates can be customized so that it looks like it's being served on your website. It also provides free statistics - how many searches and what search terms, which can also be emailed to you. Examples: First UU Church of Austin (lower left corner of screen), Davies Memorial Unitarian Universalist Church (top of every page)
*Freefind.com is an alternate service similar to AtomZ.
How can I give users the ability to adjust the font size on my site?
This message was originally posted by Lori Stone Sirkosky to the websters list in March 2004:

If you use css and relative font-sizes, this script is for you. I just implemented it on our church's website and we really love it. It places links (images, buttons, or text) in your HTML page that allows the user to change the font-size for your site.

Example site:

Unitarian Universalist Church of Indianapolis
http://www.uui.org

Even though most browsers these days allow for changing font size, many users never venture too far into the buttons and menu items at the top. And some may not want to change their font size globally.

This javascript gives people the opportunity (see upper right corner of example site) to set
a custom font-size for just your website (so they don't have to adjust the
browser's font-size and potentially screw up other sites that they like to
view at a different size). And best yet, if your users have cookies
enabled. It remembers everytime they come back to your site what size they
like to view it at.

I've tested it in IE and Mozilla for PC. Seems to work pretty well. Another websters user tested it on a mac.

If you are interested in getting the script for your own website, you can
get it for free at:

:My sense is that the "Community Portal" is generally used for the local wiki community itself. So I'd put links to uu activities on another page (as hinted at in my outline for the main page). --NealMcB 15:13, 26 Jul 2004 (CDT)

I looked at the wikipedia community page, and think that a "things you can do" block would be great, but I don't know how to replicate it. Are these widgets that automatically list the tasks that need to be completed? Also, I want to suggest the establishment of a style guide to cover items like you have listed, such as terminology. --Davidsmith 16:44, 31 Jul 2004 (CDT)
Davidsmithhttps://uuism.net/uuwiki/index.php?title=Content_Management_System&diff=115Content Management System2004-07-31T03:24:25Z
Davidsmith: Added link to CMS Matrix

The website Open Source CMS Systems allows you to demo approximately 40 to 50 LAMP-based software packages. (Linux Apache MySql Php - based).

The website CMS Matrix allows you to compare features on approximately 100 different solutions. The "Search the Matrix" feature allows you to filter the list according to the features that you need for your site.
